Standard globe and gate valves are commonly used for isolation, but they often struggle in high-temperature steam lines. Frequent thermal cycling and scale accumulation can damage metal-to-metal seats, leading to minor leaks that erode the seating surfaces over time (wire drawing). Piston valves offer a glandless, bubble-tight sealing solution designed specifically for these challenging services.
Unlike standard valves that press a flat plug against a metal ring, a piston valve utilizes a polished metal cylinder (piston) that slides through two resilient, non-metallic sealing rings. The upper ring acts as a gland seal, while the lower ring provides the inline flow shutoff.
Piston valves are widely used for steam main isolation, condensate lines, thermal fluid systems, and process utilities where reliable shutoff and zero leakage are critical.
