PTFE Lined Valves: The Solution for Highly Corrosive Chemical Processing

The Challenge of Corrosive Media

Chemical processing plants handle highly aggressive fluids, including concentrated acids (sulfuric, hydrochloric), strong bases, and organic solvents. Standard metal valves (even high-grade stainless steel) can corrode rapidly in these environments, leading to frequent leaks, process contamination, and short service lifespans. PTFE lined valves offer an engineering solution by combining metallic structural strength with fluoropolymer chemical inertness.

Lining Materials: PTFE and FEP

The internal surfaces of the valve body and disc are completely lined with a thick layer of plastic. The two most common lining materials are:

  • PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene): Offers excellent temperature resistance (up to 200°C) and is virtually inert to almost all chemicals.
  • FEP (Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene): Easier to mold than PTFE, providing a pore-free lining that is highly resistant to permeation. Suitable for lower-temperature applications (up to 150°C).

Key Valve Types with Lining

Lining is commonly applied to quarter-turn valves due to their simple internal geometries:

  1. Lined Butterfly Valves: Provide throttling and isolation for large diameter corrosive lines.
  2. Lined Ball Valves: Deliver bubble-tight shutoff and low operating torque in highly acidic media.

Conclusion

PTFE and FEP lined valves represent a premium, durable choice for corrosive chemical service. They prevent corrosion failures, reduce maintenance downtime, and protect plant piping integrity.
